This document is an educational primer built from first principles, intended to take a reader with no prior knowledge from the underlying science of solid oral dosage forms through to a working understanding of the pharmaceutical excipients sub-sector and its Indian participants. It synthesises publicly reported company disclosures (annual reports, half-yearly and quarterly results, investor presentations, earnings calls and exchange filings), credit-rating agency publications, regulatory and industry-association guidance from bodies including IPEC and the pharmacopoeias, and commercially published market research. All charts, tables and diagrams in this report were purpose-built for this document to illustrate the concepts and figures discussed.
Financial figures are drawn from company reporting for FY26 (year ending March 2026) and are rounded for readability. Where segment, capacity or mix figures are self-reported by companies — for example installed capacity, traded volume share, customer concentration or forward guidance — they carry the usual limitations of self-reported data and should be independently verified before being relied upon. Forward-looking figures including market-size projections, capacity targets, growth rates and margin guidance are estimates and subject to material revision.
Several figures in this report are explicitly labelled indicative — notably the cost-split in Figure 3.2, the grade-ladder margins in Figures 5.2 and 10.1, the direct-compression adoption share in Figure 8.1, and the price ratio in Figure 4.2. These are constructed to illustrate the structure of the industry's economics and should not be read as measured data or used as inputs to a model. Published market-size estimates disagree by up to a third, as Figure 6.2 demonstrates directly; they are used here to establish order of magnitude and direction only.
The June 2025 fire at the Pashamylaram facility resulted in loss of life. It is discussed in this report only in terms of its disclosed financial and operational consequences, which is the limited purpose of a sector primer. Nothing in that discussion is intended to characterise causes, responsibility or the human cost, all of which are matters for the relevant authorities and for far more serious treatment than a document of this kind can offer.
